So, you’ve heard about the Dark Web from TV shows where some crazy hackers used it for some nefarious purpose. But what is the Dark Web exactly, and how is it relevant to your cyber security in Brisbane? Definition: Dark Web The Dark Web is a portion of the larger Deep Web, which refers to websites that are not searchable or indexed by regular search engines. Much of the Deep Web consists of legitimate, privately hosted content for subscribers only. However, the Deep Web’s privacy and inaccessibility also provide an environment for the exchange of illegal substances, guns, data, identities, counterfeit money and software, and so the list goes on. How Can This Affect Your Business? Without the appropriate cyber security precautions in place, your company is vulnerable to cybercriminals trawling for your unprotected digital credentials. These credentials (such as usernames and passwords) are among the most valuable assets traded on the Dark Web.
Employees will regularly use their work email address on third party websites like HR and payroll, email services, CRMs, travel sites, banking and social media, making your business vulnerable to a breach. Despite being warned against it, most people use the same username and password for multiple services, which exponentially increases the risk of further criminal activity from stolen digital credentials.
Once these digital credentials are compromised, they can be sold on the Dark Web. Frequently, companies will have no idea that this has happened until they are either threatened by a cyberattack or alerted to the breach by law enforcement agencies.
At this point, unfortunately it's usually too late because there has been unauthorised access and damage to your computer networks. The purpose of such an attack would be to disrupt, destroy, control or disable your system or alternatively to manipulate or steal the data from inside your system. Ideally, every organisation should have systems in place to protect itself from such cyber crimes.
